River of Fog: A Journey of the Jamapa River is a book-length reflection that stems from the hybrid documentary-fiction film River of Fog and the exhibition project River of Fog, River of Adobe, River of Blood, both by visual artist Tania Ximena Ruiz. This book compiles images from the various exhibition moments of the pieces that make up the body of work in the show, film stills and video installations, photographs documenting the different filming sessions, as well as photographs by the cinematographers and collaborators. It also includes archival research material and excerpts from the film's script.
The core of these pages consists of texts commissioned from individuals closely involved in both projects, who were invited to think about and write original, independent works that flow and converge around the Jamapa Glacier, the Jamapa River, its territory and basin, its ontologies, cosmogonies, and grief. One could say that this book is yet another piece of the larger project it encompasses; a journey that began in 2015 at 5,200 meters above sea level on the Citlaltépetl volcano, the place where the Jamapa River is born from the melting of the Jamapa Glacier. The river then flows and meanders through canyons and plains, joining (and dividing) with tributaries until it reaches the sea at Boca del Río, in the Gulf of Mexico.
