ARCHITECTURE
Alice Rahon was always a free spirit, never seeking to represent Mexico, her adopted country, yet she drew inspiration from its vast open spaces, its omnipresent nature, its bustling cities, and its baroque festivals. She commands attention and captivates with an intimate, unclassifiable art, in which the poetry of images replaces that of words. Despite a brief period of renown in Paris as a poet, an invitation from André Breton to join the Surrealist circle, a friendship with René Char, collaborations with Man Ray, and courtship by Pablo Picasso, Alice Rahon (1904–1987) remained largely unknown in France for a long time. This book is a tribute to one of the artists who did the most to give space to abstract art in an artistic landscape long dominated by the figurative and socially engaged painting of the Mexican School.
