Unique Piece. Handwoven blanket made on a backstrap loom by artisan Petra Rivera Estrada in Hueyapan, Morelos. This one-of-a-kind piece, composed of two joined panels, celebrates traditional techniques and the talent of a skilled artisan.
The backstrap loom is set up by tying the warp threads to two wooden beams or sticks called heddles, which support the weaving and define its width. The upper end of the loom is tied to a tree, while the other end is held at the waist with a tumpline, a type of sash that the weaver uses to tension the loom. From the constant back-and-forth movement of alternating threads, rectangular pieces of fabric emerge, which are widened by means of joins or rounds.
The basic forms of the designs are the representation of anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and phytomorphic figures; these garments are works of art that treasure the ideology and worldview of the weavers, and transmit a cultural expression of the community to which they belong.

Follow these tips to keep your wool garment in perfect condition:
Wash in cold or low temperature water, using the delicate cycle. Avoid hot water, as it could cause significant shrinkage.
Do not use a spin dryer or tumble dryer, and avoid hanging to dry if possible. Ideally, lay it flat to dry.
Do not iron if possible; if necessary, use the lowest temperature.
If dry cleaning is necessary, ensure that mild solvents are used.
