Handmade serape with a combination of colors and unique design, made on a pedal loom in Tlaxcala, Mexico.

The serape is a representative textile of Mexico, its quality in spinning and weaving is comparable to the most refined textiles in the world. It is characterized by a tripartite design consisting of a dominant central element and a contrasting background with repeating designs. We find it from Guatemala to the Navajo Indian region in New Mexico. Although this garment was produced in Puebla, Texcoco, Querétaro, San Miguel de Allende and Tlaxcala, the name “Saltillo” dates back to the 17th century to an annual fair held in Saltillo to honor San Mateo, where many people came to buy fine sarapes.

During the fight for independence, the sarape became part of the clothing of the “chinacos”, famous for wearing a short jacket and for their bravery on the battlefield; It would later become a symbol of Mexican identity and pride. Even Maximilian of Habsburg sent a sarape to Napoleon III, which caused it to become a coveted object for visitors, an excellent gift from Mexican rulers and a legacy from the anonymous weavers of Mexico.

Wool Care

Follow these tips to keep your wool garment in perfect condition:

Wash in cold or low temperature water, using the delicate cycle. Avoid hot water, as it could cause significant shrinkage.

Do not use a spin dryer or tumble dryer, and avoid hanging to dry if possible. Ideally, lay it flat to dry.

Do not iron if possible; if necessary, use the lowest temperature.

If dry cleaning is necessary, ensure that mild solvents are used.
